Free Yourself of your Morality

Morality is a belief system that divides our modes of expression (feelings, thoughts, words, and actions) into categories of “good/right” and “bad/wrong”. In this belief system, actions that fall in the category of “good/right” are believed to bring us praise and reward, and give us a chance at salvation from an imagined or real punishment. On the opposite hand, actions considered “bad/wrong” are believed to attract misfortune, promising us pain, punishment, or some other form of undesirable outcome. In this sense, morality is based on a foundation of fear. Fear is morality’s keystone. Without fear, morality has no platform to stand upon.

What’s important to remember is that the moral codes we’ve adopted and placed our beliefs in have been defined by people in places of power. In other words, moral codes are not fixed, nor are they absolutes. They’re simply beliefs that have been defined by some people at some point in time, and are eventually agreed upon by communities large and small.

Spirituality on the other hand, is the exploration of the Self beyond the physical body.

Spirituality is the exploration of who we are, what the purpose and meaning of our life is, whether or not we’re part of something greater than ourselves and if so, what that something is and how it relates to us.

The reason why spirituality and morality can find themselves side by side in one conversation is because spirituality is often confused with religion. Although religious cultures have spiritual concerns at their core, they’ve also been highly infused with moral codes, especially in the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Spirituality is an exploration and not a belief system.

When an individual sets out to explore the Self and the meaning of life, they embark on a journey as a sailor would on a ship. The only promise of the exploration is the discovery of new landscapes, creatures and adventures, all of which expanding the sailor’s perspective and experience of reality. As the spiritual exploration deepens, the individual also becomes more aware of, and attuned to the frequencies of their feelings, thoughts, words, actions, and environments. Every frequency has a certain quality that generates a certain sensation and a way we feel.

When the choices we make are based upon the experiences they generate rather than based on the fear of punishment or the hope for reward, good and bad lose their meaning.

We choose to love, forgive, help those in need, or be honest because these choices generate emotions that feel pleasant, energizing, soothing, fulfilling, and expansive. We choose to avoid hurting, blaming, lying, steeling, or killing because these choices generally create emotions that feel unsettling, uncomfortable and depleting.

From this place of awareness and sensibility, our choices no longer need to arise from an illusion of fear, guilt, or hope but are instead inspired by the real energetic impact they generate in our bodies and in our lives. Awareness and sensibility allow us to see and feel the heavy, scratchy, and burdening cloak of morality for what is it: an illusion. Awareness and sensibility offer us instead the possibility to say: “ Thank you big, heavy, and scratchy coat, but I think I can take you off now because the sun is out, the birds are singing, and I’m ready to raise my arms, shake my head, and dance my way through life.”
